Add the little pellets to water and watch them grow.........
After just an hour they have expanded greatly.
The full sized 'marbles' are filling the vase......
Ready to drain and add some fresh flowers to the vase-the water stays in the beads for 30-60 days!
(We went to the flea market in Daytona and I thought these were interesting enough to try!)

I'm pretty sure there's a similar product to use in pot plants. It holds the water and releases it slowly - they're called water retention crytals, or ssome such name.
